Machine literature sprays the human opposition with bullet points

We cannot help but feel under attack.

Although a fairly common piece of business, it is rare to find an exploration of how texts such as the following came into existence. We see them everywhere. The sheer number of basically disconnected, verbose points, their goals, not entirely clear. Imagine it posted under missed connections; would they find love? Or just another corporate entity, capable of filling their imaginary conditions with imaginary references.

Just as spambots must include poetry in their penis enlargement advertisements, corporate literature can only hide their essentially mechanical nature behind the veil of a skilled human writer. When the writer fails, the cables beneath the skin are glimpsed.

But the literature of craigslist is a literature of machines. What type of machine?

Possibilities include:

• Cut-up: this document has been passed down from hiring manager to hiring manager over the course of many years. It is a chain letter, a 419 spam, a document whose essential form and reason for existence remains the same, while some small details change. It could even exist as a template in Microsoft Word or some other new software package.

• Group Ideation: imagine a group of young professionals sitting around a whiteboard, a summer camp for designer jeans and polo shirts. There are certain rules to the game; the most obvious ones start, then the jokes, then a few pet projects, a few terms recently read just to make one look smart and fashion-forward. Then everyone takes their coffee and donuts to their desk, and the youngest, most poorly paid of them types it all up.

A letter has been sent to inquire about the process. In the meantime, welcome to the Craigslist Literature Review.
